Joint Injections
Joint injections are commonly used in equine sports medicine to manage inflammation and discomfort within a joint. Repetitive athletic activity, normal wear, previous injuries, and joint disease can all contribute to inflammation that may affect a horse’s comfort, mobility, and performance.
Before recommending joint injections, the veterinarian evaluates the horse to determine which joints may be contributing to the concern and whether injection is an appropriate treatment. Depending on the horse’s needs, different medications or biologic therapies may be recommended and administered directly into the affected joint.
Joint injections are not a one-size-fits-all treatment and should be based on the individual horse, clinical findings, workload, and veterinary diagnosis. When appropriately used as part of a comprehensive care plan, they can help manage joint health, while supporting comfort and continued athletic performance.
