Performance Exams
A performance exam is a comprehensive evaluation designed to assess a horse’s soundness, comfort, and ability to perform at its best. These exams are especially valuable for equine athletes experiencing subtle changes in movement, behavior, or performance, even when there is no obvious lameness.
During the exam, the veterinarian evaluates the horse’s overall physical condition, movement, and musculoskeletal health. This may include palpation, flexion tests, gait evaluation on different surfaces or under saddle, and additional diagnostics such as radiographs or ultrasound when indicated.
Performance exams help identify potential sources of discomfort, address concerns early, and develop an individualized plan to support the horse’s soundness, longevity, and performance goals.
