Lameness Exams

A lameness examination is a systematic veterinary evaluation used to determine the source of pain or discomfort affecting a horse’s movement. Lameness can range from an obvious change in gait to subtle unevenness, stiffness, reluctance to perform, or changes in behavior under saddle.

The veterinarian begins by evaluating the horse’s history, physical condition, and movement. The examination may include palpation, hoof testing, observation at different gaits and on different surfaces, flexion tests, and diagnostic nerve or joint blocks to help localize the area of concern. Radiographs or ultrasound may then be recommended to further evaluate the affected structures.

Accurately identifying the source of lameness is an important first step in developing an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan. Early evaluation can also help prevent minor concerns from becoming more significant problems that affect your horse’s comfort or performance.
